Tips for Choosing a Bridal Seamstress

  1. Never pay a sitting fee. A good seamstress will not charge for her estimates.
  2. The estimate you receive should be solid. An experienced seamstress can provide a reliable price for your project before she begins. If additional materials are needed, she will let you know she needs time to gather the prices.
  3. 12-14 weeks prior to your wedding is the ideal time for your first visit. 6-8 months is too risky; you may gain or lose weight in that time.
  4. A confident seamstress will ask for no more than half up front. You should have a balance until your dress is completed in case further tweaks are needed.
  5. Ask questions! While many questions cannot be answered without seeing the garment, an experienced seamstress will do her best to put your mind at ease and be forthcoming with as many details as she can.
  6. Request alterations for your bridal party or mom’s dresses be completed at the same time. This will take something off your list and give you a single point of contact for all alterations.
  7. Double check that your seamstress welcomes children. I love when my clients bring their little ones, but not all seamstresses do.

Appointment Guidelines

Clothing alterations are very personal. Bridal alterations are even more so. To ensure your utmost satisfaction, I follow these guidelines for appointments. Please note, very intricate alterations may require more than two appointments.

First Appointment: Please bring your gown or other garment. Wear the undergarments you plan on wearing at your special event, or something substantively close. For example, please do not wear a yoga shorts or a sports bra for bridal measurements. You’ll be measured and provided a quote.

It is very important that you inform me (or any seamstress) of anticipated body changes. This can include pregnancy or childbirth, dieting, even upcoming surgeries. As an example: if your wedding is in 6 months, and you will be giving birth in 4, it would be better to postpone alterations until after delivery. Your measurements will be inaccurate and your dress will not fit appropriately.

Last Appointment: This is your final fitting. We’ll ensure your gown or garment fits appropriately. It is extremely important you wear the undergarments you will wear at the event for this fitting. This is a perfect time to bring a trusted person to help you inspect your gown or garment to ensure it entirely meets your expectations.

Refunds: My work is guaranteed. For 50 years, my goal has been to ensure every client is happy with the work they receive.

As I do not require deposits and request payment only at pick up, all payments are non-refundable. Payment constitutes an acknowledgement you are satisfied with my work. Please let me know of any problems during your last appointment so they can be addressed immediately before the garment or gown leaves my possession.

If, after the garment has left my possession but before your event, you notice a defect or error in your alteration, please contact me directly as soon as possible. Concerns will only be discussed between myself and the client.
